Flanders
Did you know that office workers in Flanders sit still for an average of 5.5 hours per working day? A worrying figure, because sitting still for too long brings a number of health risks. That is why the Vlaams Instituut Gezond Leven launched 'active working': getting up from your chair every half hour. A small effort with proven health benefits: you burn more fat and calories, you protect your body against cardiovascular disease and diabetes, and you reduce the risk of back problems. On top of that, your energy levels shoot up.
Employees who limit how long they sit and regularly break it up by standing, walking around and moving don't just feel a positive impact on their physical health. They have more energy, can concentrate better and are more productive. Less absenteeism, a good working atmosphere and a positive image are the bonus for the company.
General tips to break up sitting:
- Drink regularly. Instead of putting a large bottle on your desk, fetch a glass each time. An added benefit is that you need to go to the toilet more often, so you automatically stand up.
- Put the coffee machine in a separate room.
- Walk over to a colleague to ask something instead of calling, emailing or chatting.
- Don't put the printer too close, or place it in a separate room. That way you will have to stand up every time you collect a document.
- Work and hold meetings standing up now and then, or go for a walk while you meet.
- Take phone calls standing up.
- Use IT tools that remind you to stand up. A pop-up appears on your screen at regular intervals, reminding you to stretch your legs.
- Use ergonomic aids to work more dynamically, such as a desk bike, a dynamic office chair or an anti-fatigue mat.
