The sustainable office

At Buro International, we are committed to creating sustainable working environments that not only have a positive impact on the environment, but also contribute to employee wellbeing and productivity. We believe that a "feel good office" can play a key role in fostering creativity, collaboration and satisfaction among employees.

In our range, we not only offer sustainable products, such as furniture made from recycled materials and/or manufactured with minimal environmental impact, but we also look at how we can make use of the furniture you already have.

We also understand the current challenges of the "war for talent", in which attracting and retaining qualified, engaged employees is essential to a company's success. Employees are increasingly looking for workplaces that support their wellbeing and reflect their own values. By implementing a sustainable office design, employers can stand out as companies committed to people's health and wellbeing, as well as to a sustainable future.

Naturally, Buro International has set out its own approach as a company in its Corporate Social Responsibility Statement, which you can request via this link.

So how do we see the sustainable office of tomorrow?

It all starts with the will to change and a pragmatic approach to sustainability in the workplace.

Make sustainable choices as a company and encourage sustainable behaviour. For example, provide enough recycling bins in several places around the workplace.

Set an example for external partners as a company. Equip high-end meeting rooms with dedicated Teams solutions, so travel is not always necessary and a Teams meeting can be just as effective.

How should a sustainable office be designed?

Besides encouraging sustainable behaviour and making environmentally responsible choices, the physical layout of the office is crucial for sustainability and employee wellbeing. A sustainable office design needs careful thought and should be tailored to the needs of its users. Here are some guidelines for a sustainable office layout:

  1. Plenty of greenery, good ventilation and lighting: Integrating plants into the interior not only improves the look of the workspace, but also contributes to better air quality and reduces stress. Natural ventilation and plenty of daylight are also essential for a healthy working environment and can reduce energy consumption.

  2. Enough personal workstations for focused work: Although flexible workstations are becoming increasingly popular, it is important to also provide enough individual workspaces where employees can concentrate and work undisturbed when needed. Ergonomic furniture and acoustic solutions help create a comfortable and productive working environment.

  3. Enough small, medium and large shared spaces for (digital) meetings: Meeting rooms should be designed flexibly to support different kinds of meetings, from informal brainstorming sessions to formal presentations. By investing in advanced audiovisual technology, companies can also facilitate virtual meetings, reducing the need for physical travel.

  4. Enough informal zones for social interaction and relaxation: Creating informal meeting spots, such as lounge corners or cafeterias, encourages social interaction and promotes a positive company culture. These spaces can also serve as places to relax and recharge during breaks.

By taking these aspects into account when designing a sustainable office, companies can not only reduce their ecological footprint, but also improve the wellbeing and productivity of their employees. A well-thought-out office design that combines sustainability and user comfort can be a powerful statement of an organisation's commitment to a healthy and sustainable future.

FAQ: The sustainable office

  1. What makes an office 'sustainable'? A sustainable office combines environmentally responsible choices (such as furniture made from recycled materials, waste separation and energy-efficient solutions) with a physical layout that supports employee wellbeing: plenty of greenery, daylight and ventilation, ergonomic furniture and acoustic solutions.
  2. Why is a sustainable office important for attracting staff? In the 'war for talent', employees increasingly choose employers who share their values. A sustainable office design shows commitment to health, wellbeing and a sustainable future, and helps companies stand out when attracting and retaining qualified staff.
  3. Which spaces should a sustainable office include? A good mix of four zones: enough individual workstations for focused work, small to large meeting rooms for both in-person and digital meetings, informal zones for social interaction and relaxation, and plenty of greenery and natural light throughout the office.
